Yes, we know bushwalkers / hikers / mountaineers are supposed to be tough – but the fact is that when we get into camp or into the hut in the evening, there are very few of us who are not deeply grateful to get that pack off. You know what it’s like: suddenly you feel stronger and lighter. You feel as if you could do another ten km’s. The blood is getting back into your shoulders. You can move without staggering.

So why do we put up with discomfort and inconvenience in the first place?

One of the reasons is ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it.’

And frankly, that’s not a very good reason for doing anything.
